The 2008 Emerald Awards was a true experience and inspiration. And not only because I discovered I can last over three hours in the same pair of heels… Seeing the excitement among presenters, recipients and guests alike was truly motivating: testament that Foundations like ours play a significant role in motivating Albertans to protect what matters most.

I learned that you cannot put limited value on sheer passion and initiative. Each project honoured is unarguably inspirational as it stands alone, but even more so together do our recipients, finalists and nominations represent an impressive body of commitment. Together, their stories enable others to see that their efforts can make a difference. This is extremely important in the face of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that threaten our environment.

The smiles of encouragement from Mayor Mandel and Minister Renner reassure me that there is confidant, capable and positive leadership in Alberta to affect change: their enthusiasm is contagious! Our provincial vision needs to reflect its boundless potential, and individuals like these are setting the bar high, where it should be.

I look forward to following the stories that were highlighted and honoured at this year’s event, and I extend my admiration and congratulations to the 2008 Emerald Award recipients!
